Well we should start by introducing ourselves.

EvolveAware was originally created by Australian yoga teachers and meditators as an idea that would overtime grow into something more. EvolveAware is a philosophy that believes in self development at a pace that is aware of itself.

What On Earth Does that mean!?

Basically EvolveAware believes we should exercise our bodies our minds and eat healthily.

So How is this Unique?

Well, we all know we should exercise for 30 minutes a day and eat 5 fruit and vegetables but for many people this just isn’t enough for a fulfilling life.

Many people still feel under nourished with our modern way of living and the real kicker is that even though we do all the things we are told is good for us we still  feel like crap, And don’t know why!

We believe a more holistic strategy for living is needed. While Dr Smith by and large has doctor-medical-medicine-health-42273always been well intentioned, he has only been taught from a text book. A text book that while to our current understandings of science, is scientifically rigorous, is not necessarily always helpful.

One Flaw of Science

Science is unequivocally, unarguably 100% a good thing. Science is in its purest sense a search for truth based on elements we have found to be already true. Its a tower of knowledge built upon blocks of pre-established “truth”.

For example, we know Water is a liquid and it can boil at a certain temperature. We know all the little truths that go into this concept – liquid molecules, heat energy, gas molecules. And so this little piece of scientific knowledge is accepted as science fact.

What happens however when science comes to a place where it doesnt know or cannot see all the little truths in a situation. Take for example Sleep

Science in the Dark

Snooze a’clock

We know that the human body is regulated by an internal clock that keeps us on a sleep/wake cycle. Sleep is the time when our bodies repair tissues and maintains itself. We spend nearly a third of our lives snoozing! But we still don’t know WHY!

This is because there are many truths in the sleep concept that science is yet to quantify and discover.

The problem with this is that society has become accustomed to calling these unquantifiable truths fictions, when in fact they are just realities we don’t yet know how to fit into our understanding and process.

Our Purpose

We believe there are alternative means of healthy fulfilling living and that is what EvolveAware seeks to promote. We aren’t afraid to try the alternative ways of life even though science has yet to verify them. By living out our own experiences we seek to see what our reality is and share it with others.

Our Mission

We will be sharing our discoveries and ideas for healthy holistic living and hope you can join us and share with us your realities to.

Maybe we wont all become enlightened spirits by Thursday but hey, we will give it a go and enjoy the ride!

10 Best Essential Oils (And Why)

Essential oils are natural and highly concentrated oils that have been extracted from a part of a flower, plant or tree. They offer remedies for all sorts of home and health issues and they can be used in a bath, for massage or in an essential Oil Diffuser.

Many traditional hospitals and western doctors have begun taking advantage of the properties of essential oils to use them in treating anxiety, depression and even infections in patients. Here is a study showing their antibacterial properties- Essential Oils Science

Essential Oils Benefits Scientific

Biology of Aromatherapy

So, now you know that benefits derived using essential oils aren’t only due to a placebo affect – they offer scientifically proven benefits, you probably really want to take advantage of them.

If you’re just starting out with essential oils, you may want to try picking up just a few different types, and then building up your collection as you get used to blending and using them on a regular basis.

Tips for first-time buyers of essential oils

Keep in mind that perfume oils aren’t the same as essential oils and don’t offer therapeutic benefits.
Be aware that there are poor quality essential oils on the market that won’t give you much benefit either, including oils that are diluted with cheaper, low-grade oils and synthetic fragrances. By purchasing your essential oils from a reputable supplier, you can help ensure that you’ll be getting the highest quality, and therefore, the highest level of benefits.
Your essential oils should not be capped with a rubber glass dropper top as the oils will eventually turn the rubber to a gummy substance that will render your oil useless. They should be stored, and typically come in, a dark glass like amber or cobalt blue. Keep them in a cool, dark place.

Essential oils Natural

Make Sure Your Oils are high quality and Organic.

Pay attention to the botanical name, as there are different varieties of common plants used to create the oils. Choose to purchase only from companies that list the Latin name of the oil, as well as the common name, to avoid confusion. The company should also list the country of origin it was derived from along with the method of extraction.

What are the best essential oils for beginners?

There are roughly 100 different types of essential oils, and each and every essential oil contains compounds that have unique healing and therapeutic benefits, making it difficult to know where to start when first building your collection.

Doterra Essential Oils

We personally recommend the brand Doterra for its premium quality but there are many high quality brands.

Selecting several from this list, and adding a few more as you go, is a good way to begin.

1. Ylang Ylang:
Ylang Ylang is mainly a Sedative: Health benefits of ylangylang essential oil includes providing relief from stress and anxiety. This oil sedates or calms nervous afflictions, stress, anger and anxiety, while inducing a relaxed feeling. It also has Nerve optimising properties. YlangYlang Essential Oil is a health booster for the nervous system.

2. Chamomile:
There are two types of chamomile, an essential oil well-known for offering calming effects. They offer similar benefits, although Roman chamomile tends to be more calming, while German chamomile is considered to be a more powerful anti-inflammatory agent as it contains a compound known as azulene. Just a few of its beneficial properties including being an antibiotic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antidepressant, sedative and analgesic. It may help to relieve anxiety, tension, and stress as well as to aid in healing the skin and soothe irritation. It may also aid in the promotion of the secretion of digestive juices, facilitating better digestion. With so many different benefits chamomile oil is a must for anyone’s medicine cabinet.

3. Lavender:
Lavender is known to help speed healing in cuts and burns as well as rashes and stings. It can also decrease anxiety, reduce inflammation and promote better sleep, particularly after trauma. Its specific properties include being an analgesic, antifungal, antiseptic, sleep inducing and a disinfectant. As mentioned, there are different types of lavender essential oils, including English varieties (Lavandula angustifolias), French (Lavandula dentate) and Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia), which grows in lower elevation areas of France and Spain. Bulgarian Lavandula angustfolia is generally considered to be the best pick as it’s lower in cost than the others but offers the same benefits. Bulgaria is also the world’s biggest producer of lavender oil. Put a few drops on your pillow just before going to bed, and odds are, you’ll get a much better night’s rest.

4. Ginger:
Ginger essential oil contains gingerol, which offers powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s also been shown in studies to increase thermogenesis, resulting in a boosted metabolism which makes it easier to lose weight. It’s stimulating, relieves nausea and pain, supports joint health and improves mental clarity.

Peppermint oil not only smells wonderful, it can help boost your energy level, improve focus, support healthier digestion, reduce fever and headache, and provide muscle pain relief. Some of its properties include being antiseptic, analgesic, a stimulant, anesthetic, and antispasmodic. Carry some along with you when you’re traveling, or just out and about, and when fatigue hits, take a whiff – it’s an instant pick-me-up.

Sandalwood has a wonderful spicy, earthy aroma. It acts as a natural aphrodisiac that can boost libido and improve energy levels too. In addition to being an aphrodisiac, it’s considered to be anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent and serves as a calming, sedative substance. There are three varieties of sandalwood; avoid Australian sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum), which does not offer many benefits, as well as Hawaiian sandalwood(Santalum Ellipticum), as it tends to be very expensive without offering additional value. Indian sandalwood (Santalum Album), is considered to be the best.

9. Tea tree:
Tea tree is antibiotic, anti-fungal, antiseptic, expectorant and antiviral. It’s often used to inhibit viral and bacterial infections. It can even be used to kill insects, protect a wound and speed the healing of a scar. If you have a cold or a cough it can stimulate systemic functions and appropriate discharges, it can less its duration.

10. Rosemary:
Rosemary improves brain function and memory, making it ideal to use when working or studying. It’s also known to relieve mental fatigue, helping one to focus on a particular task longer. As it can naturally stimulate hair growth and thicken hair, if you want to enjoy thicker, healthier, locks, add a bit to a homemade shampoo and/or conditioner. Regular use of this oil can result in hair that’s longer and stronger. If you suffer a dry, flaky scalp or other scalp conditions, regularly massage rosemary oil into your scalp to nourish it and eliminate dandruff. Other attributes include the ability to reduce pain and relieve respiratory issues.

Essential Oils at the least offer a pleasant aroma that can help create a warm and comfortable living space. Give them a try and see which works best for you!

Yoga Mats: Choosing the Perfect One

Your Yoga Mat

The correct mat will ensure that no matter how strenuous of a pose you find yourself in you stay comfortable. Choosing the correct mat is not as easy as it used to be though. Today, we have such a massive choice of Yoga mat varieties that choosing your perfect yoga mat can be difficult.

Yoga mats Pile

So which Mat do you want?

Yoga mats come in a plethora of different colors and patterns to suit all yogis. Looking past that yoga mats then also have a wide variety of different textures, materials and thicknesses that make choosing your perfect mat a minefield of possibilities.

The grip or stickiness of your yoga mat is what makes you stable on the floor. You do not want a mat that will slide around during your first Downward Facing Dog.

Lets break some of the mat factors down:

Yoga Mat Aesthetics

This is the easiest choice as often you can just pick whichever one looks the best to you! There are many Beautiful Mats to choose from.

With that in mind you will be looking at them a lot and you do want to get one that will retain its looks as time goes on. Maybe choose something that will resonate with you for a long time as opposed to a big bright fluorescent mat that looked cool in the night markets!

Yoga Mat Texture:

The texture of your mat includes its absorbency and “stickiness”. A mat with a raised texture will stick to the floor better than other styles. A textured mat will easily stick to the floor even without suction. This means that textured mats are easier to remove from

yoga mat comfort

Comfort is Important

the floor than sticky mats as sticky mats have a lot of inbuilt suction.

Textured mats are often sturdier and more durable than sticky mats, but they do not provide quite as much stability.

If smoothness is important to you, a PVC yoga mat is the way to go but PVC needs to be washed more often.

If firm grip that is more durable is more important than go for a textured mat.

Yoga Mat Materials

There are many materials to choose from in yoga mats now.

When looking at materials, the choices generally come down to Eco yoga mat

Eco-friendly materials (recycled or biodegradable materials)

Standard vinyl or

Most newer mats are made from biodegradable phthalate, recycled rubber, or woven jute.

Using a mat made from recycled or biodegradable materials has become more popular in recent years especially for the eco -conscious. Mats made of cotton fiber are easy to clean and good for the environment. Generally they are not overly expensive and are of as good as or better quality than traditional materials.

Generally, PVC offers the most stretch of any yoga mat material; jute and cotton have the least.

Mat Thickness

Thickness is another factor to consider when buying a yoga mat. In general the thicker the mat, the more comfortable you will be in on it. Thickness tends to correlate with heavier weights, so bear in mind how heavy your mat is if your going to be carrying it a lot. Thick mats generally retain more liquid than a thin mat, so consider having a yoga towel or wipes handy for maintenance.

Choosing your yoga mat may take trying several different ones. Always consider the above factors and the cost. Today’s mats are generally made from durable materials that can last a long time but yoga mat quality does vary. A cheap PVC mat can cost just $20

but may not last long or be comfortable. Meanwhile a high quality yoga mat could cost hundreds of dollars but offer luxurious comfort and beautiful patterns of inspiration.

Choosing the right mat isn’t always easy but this guide can help. Consider what matters to you and have some fun with it!

Why You Need a Yoga Mat Bag!

A yoga mat bag or yoga backpack has become a very popular sight amoung young trendy city yogis. But are they just another fashion accessory?

As inner city yogi’s I think we all know that feeling of the final rush to class.

Picture this:
You’ve just got in from a long day at work in the office.

Because you had to rewrite that paper that your boss said he wanted (10 minutes before lunch time) your starving, and to top it all off the plates in the sink still need to be done.

You grab a quick bite to eat and look at the time.

Yep its that time already.

The Yoga Rush

Somehow even though you’ve been looking forward to class all day its crept up on you again and you have only 20 minutes to Find all your yoga equipment, get it together and rush out the door making that 15 minute journey to your yoga class through the city at busy time.

Yoga backpack yoga mat bag room

Did you see my Towel?

You frantically make a list in your head of all the things you need for class.

  • Water bottle – Check
  • Yoga Mat – Check
  • Yoga Towel – mmm?
  • Yoga Pants – Did I leave them in the drawer or in the closet?

Then you go on an epic quest of your home, dropping keys and knocking over glasses all the time cursing your lack of organisation and need for more time.

This is where the Yoga mat bag shines

Yoga Mat Bag‘s  come in many shapes and sizes. There are tote bags and backpack-style bags with either drawstring enclosures at the top or side-loading zippers. Some yoga backpacks aren’t made just for carrying your yoga mat, but can also hold other things like bottles, keys, clothes and even towels.

No more will you face the dreaded Yoga Rush.

You can have all your equipment neatly stored into a conveniently packed, lightweight yoga backpack. Ok it cant stop your boss being … a boss, but having an organised space where you can

  1. Store your yoga equipment neatly and
  2. Don’t have to waste mental energy thinking about

Really adds some zen and mental clarity to your everyday life.

And hey isn’t that what yoga is meant to be all about!

All Kinds of Yoga Mat Bags

There are all kinds of yoga mat bags and yoga backpacks depending on your needs. If you don’t mind having your yoga mat sticking out of your yoga mat bag, you can find designs that are more like regular sling bags. Even so while you can use any old bag as long as your mat can fit comfortably inside it, many yoga backpacks have extra zippered pockets where you can keep your bottles, phone or even your yoga notebook. There are bags designed for the environmentally conscious, including yoga mat bags made from recycled or organic materials  like hemp, which is both durable and sustainable.

My Thoughts Yoga Mat bag Excited

Just like all yoga accessories out there, a yoga mat bag is not absolutely essential. Yoga is designed to be done with the bare minimum of materialistic possessions. However, it can be a very useful tool, especially if you happen to have a lifestyle that could do with some organisational help. The convenience of being able to carry your mat and other goodies in a light weight, organised space make it a great investment in the long run.

And While your at it, you can also go bag shopping guilt free!

3: Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)

Benefits:  This pose helps to drain accumulated lymph fluid from the legs and upper body. Especially used at the end of your practice when all toxins that were released during exercise are flushed toward the heart space to be oxygenated and purified.
Furthermore as an inversion pose it has amazing mood and health benefits- Shapiro et al 2007 * ShoulderStand

Bring your hands to either side of the spine and slowly bend both your knees and press your feet up into the air. Lift the kneecaps and draw the belly toward the spine. Gaze towards your toes and avoid moving your head to either side. Lower to plow on your way down and return to your first position.
